Midhun Mohan, the Keralite who is fondly known as Aniyan Midhun, has won accolades and praise across the country after being the first person from South India to make it to the national Wushu (Or Kungfu, a hard and soft martial art) team, the youngster from Thrissur is now all set to participate in the ‘World Pro Wushu Sanda’ fight in Thailand which starts from June 2.
“The speciality of Pro Wushu is that we can’t chest guard and headgear, but only glow. It is more challenging and tough as compared to the Amateur Wushu. Participants from different countries are set to meet in Thailand and hence it is going to be very important. I have been training for this tournament from Bangalore and Jammu”, Aniyan Midhun told Times Now Digital.
Prior to this, Midhun won the gold medal at the South Asian Wushu championship in Nepal in the year 2021. The tournament was Midhun’s first international championship.
“I am also now preparing for the India-Pakistan Challenging championship”, added Midhun.
Midhun is currently training under Indian Wushu coach and Dronacharya award winner Kuldeep Handu.
The Thrissur native will be competing in the 70 kg category. Aniyan could be the only participant in the tournament.
Midhun started his career in Karate and boxing and slowly moved towards Wushu while he was a seventh-standard student in Thrissur.
“I was a good kick-boxing performer back then. Since it was not a well-known game and not much supported by the government, I chose to prove my calibre in Wushu. I am from a fisherman family and our earnings were purely from fishing. Even now we continue the same job as I treasure and respect the job a lot”, said Aniyan who is set to travel to Bangalore for the training session.
