Film adaptations of nostalgic children’s television shows are all the rage with The Muppets set to follow the enormous success of The Smurfs and the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise early next year.

But the really big one has been kept under wraps until now: Postman Pat: The Movie is finally happening.

It is thirty years today since the cheery Cumbrian postman first ambled onto British screens with his trusty side-kick Jess the black and white cat. Together they delivered letters, parcels and gently thrilling adventures for a pre-school audience of millions.

Since then Pat has evolved into a more high-tech operator who now has his own helicopter for especially testing deliveries and whose escapades are watched by children in more than 80 viewing territories
