Norman Hunter, hard man of the great Leeds United team, dies aged 76

The man known as “Bites-Yer-Legs” was a true legend and will live long in the memory, writes Rick Broadbent

For a generation of football fans Norman Hunter will for ever be “Bites-Yer-Legs”. It was a moniker invented by the media and one that adorned flags at Wembley Stadium and advertisements for cider. This unassuming Leeds United hero once recalled that in his pomp he even received an income tax return and was surprised to see a hand-written note enclosed. The two-word message was: “Keep biting.”

There was far more to Hunter than that, though, and he will not only be mourned by his family and friends. In the sporting void the severing of another link to the past will be hard to take both for Yorkshire folk and beyond the tribal boundaries forged in Seventies football.
