In news that will make you sad, it was reported this morning that Hillary Clinton apologized to Barack Obama after conceding the 2016 election to Donald Trump.

According to Shattered, a new book out today written by journalists Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, Clinton was urged by President Obama to concede after Wisconsin was called by Fox News shortly around 11 P.M. EST, reports The Washington Post. Those of us who were watching that evening know she did not make the call to congratulate Trump until almost 3:00 A.M. ET.

Clinton then was given a consolation call by President Obama; she apologized for the results of the election, saying, “Mr. President, I’m sorry.”

Politico reports that the book features an argument with her chief strategist Jake Sullivan, about the tone of the concession speech. Clinton insisted that it wasn’t her “job anymore” to criticize Trump: “Other people will criticize him. That’s their job. I have done it. I just lost, and that is that,” she said.

Since the election, some analysts have argued that while Hillary was beset by challenges that no candidate before her had to face, she also made key missteps over the course of her campaign that cost her the election. Though it's almost impossible to say what her exact feelings were in the moment she apologized to Obama, the news that she extended an apology to Obama right after congratulating her opponent is a brutal reminder of the disappointment many felt the morning of November 9.
