Available for auction is this 1974 Volkswagen Thing Acapulco Edition finished in Blizzard White with a blue and white striped roof and interior. During the early 1970s, the oceanfront Princess Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico had created a fleet of modified VW Things as a means of shuttling guests between the airport and city. As a result of the model's popularity, Volkswagen produced a limited run of approximately 400 “Acapulco Edition” examples in 1974 inspired by the Princess Hotel. Among the rarest versions of the Volkswagen Type 181, the Acapulco Editions come finished in a blue and white theme with a striped soft top, matching striped seats, and slatted wooden floorboards. Recently serviced and inspected, this highly collectible 1974 VW Thing is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Ohio.
This Volkswagen Thing comes finished in Blizzard White with blue accents on the rocker panels, running boards, hood, bumpers, and gas cap. The finish is described to be in fair condition with some areas of peeling paint, additional images are provided in the gallery. Features include removable doors, a retractable blue and white striped soft top, a folding windshield, and a set of chrome 15" five-spoke wheels dressed in newer Firestone tires.
Inside, the cabin is upholstered in blue and white striped vinyl and features unique teak wood floorboards. The sparsely appointed interior comes fitted with a glove box, cup holders, and a blue painted instrument panel with analog VDO dials. The seller notes that the rear bench seat is missing a spring and that the speedometer, odometer, and lights are working properly.
Power comes from a proper air-cooled 1,600cc flat-four engine that drives the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual transaxle. Recent service is said to include the installation of a new exhaust, cleaning of the fuel tank, and an oil change and inspection completed by a classic Volkswagen specialist. The brakes, wheels, and tires were found to be relatively new.
This sale will include a clean title. A charming automotive relic from a bygone era, this rare Acapulco Edition VW Thing would make a unique conversation piece in any car collection.

I see the floor has been replaced under the battery..a common rust area on Things and Beetles and no problem if its been done right..did it on my 73 Thing. Always wanted a Acapulco and now they go for a premium. The funny "Thing" is they had a hard time selling them because of the fixed Bimini top and many dealers removed that and put the folding soft top or optional hard top on them. I'm rempted to bid on this..will be watching!!
