Stephen King‘s novel “It” follows seven children who are terrorized by an ageless, shape-shifting evil that exploits the fears and phobias of its victims. The evil primarily takes the role of a sadistic clown named Pennywise. Infamously played by Tim Curry in the 1986 miniseries based on the novel, Pennywise will now be played by Bill Skarsgård (“Anna Karenina,” “Allegiant”) in the upcoming 2017 film.

Director Andy Muschietti (“Mama”) relied on the work of costume designed Janie Bryant (“Deadwood,” “Mad Men”) to bring Pennywise to life, primarily drawing upon looks from the Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Victorian eras. “The costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will,” Bryant says. “He is definitely a clown from a different time.”

She goes further and says that there’s “almost a doll-like quality to the costume”: “The pants being short, the high waistline of the jacket, and the fit of the costume is a very important element. It gives the character a child-like quality,” Bryant notes. In contrast to the eerie cheer of the early Pennywise, Bryan’t version camouflages himself in the environment. “It makes him almost like a shadow,” she says.
