March 2: Remembering Sarojini Naidu...


Sarojini Naidu is a renowned young scholar, poet, writer, freedom fighter, and social activist. She is the second woman President of the indian national congress and the first woman governor of the State of Uttar Pradesh. Her birthday is celebrated as Women's Day in India.


Sarojini Chattopadhyaya (later Sarojini Naidu) was born on 13 february 1879 in Hyderabad, india, the eldest daughter of a bengali Kulin Brahmin family. She is the eldest of 8 children in her family, her father was Aghorenath Chattopadhy, a scientist, philosopher, and educator, and her mother Barada Sundari Devi was a female poet. Her father was the founder of Nizam college, he also became the first member of the indian national congress with his friend Mulla Abdul Kam. 


At the age of 12, sarojini naidu passed her matriculation examination at the university of chennai, she topped the state level. From 1891 to 1894 she left short breaks in her studies and read books on a variety of topics. In 1895, at the age of sixteen, she first went to study at King's college London and Cambridge Gordon college on scholarships from the Nizam's Foundation.


While staying in England, at the age of 17, Mudyala met Govindarajulu Naidu, a non-Brahmin doctor, fell in love with her and married her at the age of 19. They were married in chennai in 1898 by law. It also got the approval of her progressive-minded father. Her married life was delightful. They had four children, Jayasurya, Padmaja, Randhir, and Leelamani. Later her daughter Padmaja became the governor of West Bengal.
After the independence of india on august 15, 1947, she became the governor of the United Provinces (now known as Uttar Pradesh). Through this, she became the first woman governor of India. Later she died of a heart attack on march 2, 1949.
