SEOUL — China’s Tang Wei has emerged as the actress of the hour in South Korea, as she is slated to pick up her third trophy for her role in a local melodrama.
The Busan Film Critics Association (BCFA) announced earlier this month that the Lust, Caution star has been named best actress for Late Autumn. She will be attending a ceremony for the 12th BCFA Awards on Friday. The annual event, held by the only regional film critics organization in Korea, will take place at the southern port city’s Busan Cinema Center, the new main venue for the Busan International Film Festival.
This marks the 32-year-old’s third recognition as best actress here for Late Autumn, after the 47th Paeksang Arts Awards, one of the country’s most prominent cinema events, and the 31st Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. She is the first foreigner to be honored at all three events.
Tang was also nominated for best actress at the 33rd Blue Dragon Awards on Nov. 25. Although Kim Ha-neul (Blind) took home the trophy that evening, Tang attended the event and was seen hugging the other actress to congratulate her.
Late Autumn, co-starring popular Korean actor Hyun Bin, is about a female prisoner who falls in love, with a man on the run, while on parole. A remake of the 1960s local classic Manchu, the movie directed by Kim Tae-yong premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2010.
