When stylist Elizabeth Salzman learned last December that her client Sandra Oh was tapped to co-host the Golden Globes, her first orders of business were to make the Killing Eve star feel confident onstage and minimize her outfit changes. “It’s all about Sandra,” she says.
“I think the talent is so big with Sandra and [co-host] Andy [Samberg]. It doesn’t need to be about a costume. It needs to be about them,” says Salzman. “She needs to feel comfortable. She has a lot to do. The only thing I don’t want her to think about is her clothing,” she adds.
“I decided to think of things that would make her feel confident and empowered and beautiful,” continues Salzman, who had a week to pull together Oh’s looks. To achieve that, Salzman turned to “strong female designers” Donatella Versace and Stella McCartney.
“I don’t know a more fearless, bold person who works harder than Donatella,” says Salzman. “Donatella really gives. She’s super empowering, and super fun, and has been through stuff.”
So it’s not surprising that Salzman worked with Versace on not one, but two custom looks for Oh: a red carpet look and her first hosting look.
Oh hit the carpet in a dramatic white column dress with a ruched waist and delicate, light pink beading, before opening the show in a floor-length, structured tuxedo jacket rendered in a bright poppy-red color that’s unique to the Italian fashion house (a nod to Oh’s favorite shade). It’s very “feminine-meets-masculine,” says Salzman of the look.
For the third look — in which Oh also accepted the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama series — the Golden Globes co-host stepped out in “the most amazing kapow! dress” by Stella McCartney. “It truly feels like something out of the great Hollywood films of yesteryear,” says Salzman of the form-fitting custom white silk cady gown with billowing gold sequined sleeves.
“I feel great right now because she doesn’t have to think and she is so happy with her clothes,” says Salzman. “She feels great and you can just tell.”
