Stunning LA time capsule home of late actor Charlton Heston on the market

The mid-century home of late actor Charlton Heston has hit the market with an asking price of $12.25 million ($A17.2 million).

The academy-award winning actor commissioned the house while he was filming Ben-Hur back in 1959.

The Beverley Hills home, which looks down across Los Angeles, was designed by William S. Beckett, one of the architects who participated in the Case Study Houses experiment after World War II.

The house remains virtually unchanged since it was built and has all the hallmarks of a mid-centry design with stone feature walls, expansive glass windows and a flat roof.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Heston called it “the house that Ben-Hur built”, with the family moving in just after the film wrapped up.

Situated at the end of a long cypress-flanked driveway, the house has five bedrooms, six-and-a-half bathrooms and a grand office with an impressive curved, in-built library.

Outside the living room, which features a stone wall-encased fireplace, is a triangular shaped swimming pool and terrace area.

There is also a tennis court at the back of the house, which you drive past as you enter the property.

Heston, who also starred in Planet of the Apes and played Moses in The Ten Commandments, lived in the home until he died in 2008 at the age of 84.
