Asus Eee PC 701 Netbook

Hi everyone,

 

I've got an Asus 701 4G Netbook with the following specifications:

-4G SSD
-512MB DDR2 Intel Mobile CPU & Chipset
-WiFi 802.11b/g
-10/100 Mbps Ethernet
-0.3 M Camera

 

 

Is this netbook just not good enough anymore for simple websites like Facebook, Gmail, Youtube etc?

I keep getting an error Warning: Unresponsive Script over and over again. Facebook is a nightmare to use! Youtube says opps, your web browser is no longer supported! Connecting to a wifi is also a nightmares, complicating easy tasks.

 

I wanted to sell the netbook for a low price because I don't think it costs anything no more but it's almost brand new and want to make the most out of it. I don't know how to use Linux very much but this one seems very limited, limited in space and in what to download. I have also factory reset it but its still terribly bad when it comes to web browsering (which uses Firefox btw, an old version of it because I can't update it)

 

Is there anyway this can be ''usable'' or a lost cause?

Have you tried Puppy Linux? It will give that machine a new lease on life.

 

Do you have a 2GiB USB stick?

 

Download Puppy Linux tahr-6.0.2_PAE.iso

 

Burn it to USB as an ISO with Unetbootin.  Then boot into Linux try it out.

 

You will need to set your PC to boot from USB in bios.

Burn it to USB as an ISO with Unetbootin.  Then boot into Linux try it out.

 

You will need to set your PC to boot from USB in bios.

I have nothing to lose so I guess I'll have a go for it, I think I already downloaded puppy linux in the past so it shouldnt be very challenging. Is puppy linux the most recommended? Thanks again

Puppy is by far the best option for this computer in my opinion too. Besides the small RAM, with only a 4GB SSD there isn't enough room for much else.

Fortunately 4GB is plenty for Puppy, though. I have Puppy installed to a 4GiB partition on my laptop, and there's plenty of space for it.

Could I completely remove the other linux and instal the puppy linux permenantly on the netbook?

I don't want to jump from one OS to another or use a pendrive to run it.

I'm not sure where to find it exactly but its the defult OS of the 701 4G version. Where can I check?

That'll be a stripped down version of Xandros, which has been discontinued.

Yes, you can remove it and install Puppy. But I would boot it up from USB first of all, as Nick suggested, at least to check that it runs ok. If your computer's graphics aren't good enough for Tahr Puppy, you might need to use an older Puppy.

I would also consider creating a small swap partition on your SSD of say 512MiB or so when you come to install Puppy, since the computer has so little RAM.

Frugal installation is recommended, and you have to run Grub4Dos bootloader too.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll go through this step by step as I still need to try this puppy first lol

 

So I downloaded UNetbootin and since I'm using a Windows XP right now I clicked on the download link for WIndows.

I opened the app and from the ''Select Distribution'' I selected Puppy Linux and the ''version'' to Latest Live because it was the only one the be honest.

 

At the bottom there is ''Diskimage'' button but should I check or uncheck it?

Through the browser I selected the ISO (puppy) and download to the USB.

 

Is that all good so far?

Okay never mind what I last said, I managed to boot puppy linux >.<

So I booted the puppy linux and the start up screen came, however I now got an error message saying:

I would try the noPAE version of Tahr first of all. Download tahr-6.0.2_noPAE.iso from this page (second bottom of the list). Then use UNetbootin again, but follow the instructions for using an ISO that you already have.
