Hotel Review: Goodwood Park Hotel (Poolside Suite) - Newly-Refurbished with Direct Access to the Swimming Pool
The Goodwood Park Hotel was previously the clubhouse of the Teutonic Club serving the German expatriate community in Singapore. The property is well-known for its F&B offerings with established restaurant names like Min Jiang, Gordon Grill, and Coffee Lounge, which are all housed within the large six-hectare compound. There are currently 233 guest rooms and suites at the Goodwood Park Hotel and they are housed within several wings - Lobby, Mayfair, Tower, and Parklane. Some of the rooms and suites have only quite recently undergone a refurbishment process (which completed in 2021) and they now feature a more muted but natural wood tone throughout the space.

Entrance
Poolside Suite - Goodwood Park Hotel
The newly-refurbished Poolside Suites at the Goodwood Park Hotel measures 48-55sqm in space and since this is a heritage hotel, the actual layout of the rooms and suites here might differ slightly (even within the same category). There are only 13 Poolside Suites here and all of them feature a separate expansive living room that opens out directly to the hotel's Main Pool where guests will be able to enjoy the natural and tropical breeze if desired. There is only one bathroom in the Poolside Suite and the one that I was assigned to during my stay has it located near the entrance of the room.
Bathroom

The bathroom of the Poolside Suite is fairly basic but it does come with a large shower area with an overhead rainshower attachment for you to enjoy. Do note that Poolside Suites at the Goodwood Park Hotel do not come with a bathtub so if that is something that you are after, you might want to opt for a Deluxe Poolside Suite instead - the Deluxe Poolside Suite also comes with two bathrooms which may be more suitable for those looking to have guests over, or families traveling with children.
Bath Amenities

Bath amenities in the Poolside Suites are provided by ETRO (an established fashion house in Italy) and they smell pretty good. You will find two sets of these amenities (with the exception of the body lotion) here in the bathroom - one set is located near the sink, and another will be located inside the shower area. Bath amenities in the lead-in room categories are provided by an in-house brand otherwise.

The layout of the Poolside Suite is quite interesting as I have mentioned earlier on, the actual layout of your rooms and suites here at the Goodwood Park Hotel may differ slightly as it is a heritage property. While the Poolside Suite does have a separate living area, you should note that the bedroom cannot be closed off completely - the seamless transition throughout the different living spaces creates a semi-private sanctuary which is perfect for couples of independent travelers but if you do need that physical separation, you might be better off booking a different suite instead.

The bedroom of the Poolside Suite is quite spacious and while the one that I was assigned to came with a king-size bed, there are also a handful of suites that come with twin bed configurations (perfect for families with children). As mentioned earlier, the bedroom cannot be completely partitioned off from the rest of the room so you will get a bit of noise from the living room (if you sharing this space) but it does make the whole suite feel larger than it actually is. The Poolside Suite that I stayed in also came with a connecting room which is not my first choice usually (since I am a light sleeper and there is usually noise from connecting rooms) - make sure you request for one without if you have similar preferences.
The minibar is located within the bedroom and you will be able to find a basic Nespresso machine and complimentary coffee capsules in the pull-out drawer underneath it. Complimentary teabags from TWG are also provided and these are replenished when housekeeping comes in to make up your room on longer stays.

You might notice that there are ceiling fans here in the Poolside Suites - both fans here in the suite have been restored during the refurbishment process but you might find a newer version if restoration was not possible. This is especially great for travellers who do not wish to sit in air-conditioning all day - having direct access to the Main Pool via the living room also allows you to turn off the air-conditioning, switch on the fans and enjoy the fresh natural breeze (which adds to the whole resort-feel) instead. Located inside the room is an LED TV with a wide range of cable channels for you to enjoy if you prefer to watch your favourite programs from the bed.
Bedside Controls

It is not uncommon for people to travel with multiple devices these days (even on staycations!) and the Goodwood Park Hotel has added universal power outlets as well as USB charging ports next to the bed so you can keep your devices charged while you sleep. Most of us are inseparable to our mobile devices and it certainly is a good move from the property to futureproof these so international travellers can take advantage of them when things are back to normal.
Living Room

The living room of the Poolside Suite is quite possibly my personal favourite area of the entire space. The large area here leaves plenty of room to get work done (at the work desk area) or to simply lounge about. There is also a separate LED TV here if you prefer to watch your programs from the living room - this is also perfect if you are planning to have guests over, or if you are keen on ordering in-room dining during your stay.

I received a plate of fresh fruits as part of my welcome amenity - something that I really appreciate over chocolates or sweets . Guests staying over at the Goodwood Park Hotel during this period will also find a personal health kit that comes complete with a bottle of hand sanitiser, and disposable face masks.
Living Room

Located behind the curtains in the living room is a door offering direct access to the Main Pool - the door does lock automatically once you close it and you will be able to reenter your room via this living room door with the same keycard. This is an important feature since it allows you to leave your suite without having to worry about your personal belongings - simply bring your keycard along with you when you go for a dip in the pool.

Not many people may know this but there are actually two swimming pools here at the Goodwood Park Hotel - most of us are familiar with the Main Pool since some of the restaurants look out to it but there is also a smaller, Balinese-inspired Mayfair Pool on the other side of the property. The Poolside Suites offer direct access to the main pool while the Deluxe Poolside Suites (only five on property!) offers direct access to the Mayfair Pool. As I stayed on property during the Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) period where dining-in was not allowed, it was actually moderately quiet throughout the property which made it a nice escape from the city.

As mentioned earlier, my stay at the Goodwood Park Hotel was during the Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) period where dining-in restaurants was not allowed. Since my room package comes inclusive of breakfast for two adults, I was given the option of having either a Western or Asian breakfast set per adult - I decided to go with one each and it did not disappoint. To be honest, I actually prefer to have my breakfast in the room as this allows you to decide when to eat exactly - you will also not have to worry about long lines during the peak period of breakfast.

Both the Asian and Western set comes with the main course as well as a number of sides - most of the dishes were really good and there was definitely more than enough food for two adults to enjoy. You may also opt for tea or coffee, as well as juices, to be delivered with your breakfast.
The refurbished Poolside Suites at the Goodwood Park Hotel are a nice addition to the property and I did enjoy my short stay here. While I have been to the hotel on multiple occasions for food and takeaway, it was my first time staying here overnight. While I do find connecting rooms a little bothersome (since I am a light sleeper), I did enjoy the direct access to the pool which reminded me of my frequent weekends in Bali before this whole COVID situation happened.

The JW Marriott Auckland is still refurbishing its guest rooms and suites (with an expected completion date in November 2024). I stayed in a Deluxe Room (non-refurbished) and have found the experience to be lacking of a typical JW Marriott property.
