I’ve tested it with the lens arrangement I will use it with and it’s vastly superior to the previous focus rail that I’ve been using. One issue that’s not a problem for me, but may be for others, is that you don’t really get 180 mm of travel. The index pin on the traveling head only goes to the 21 mm mark at one end and only to the 169 mm mark at the other end. The rail needs to be made just a bit longer to get 180 mm of travel. I doubt I’ll ever use the pull out thumb screw handle as it throws an off balance tork on the rail that can cause unwanted movement and seems a bit clumsy. It’s best just to use thumb and fingers to turn the knob. I like its weight and heft. I didn’t get any sag or image shift as I moved the camera along the rail. I’m using it to fine focus on fossils that I’m 3D imaging.
Wow. I replaced a cheap focusing rail I bought a couple years ago and wish I’d done so earlier. This rail is easy to use, and the movement is SO smooth. Only negative I’ve found is that with my 5D Mark IV and my 100mm macro lens, the rail on table top is wobbly. It def needs a tripod, and works like a charm on one.
