1. Ao Nang – best area to stay in Krabi for the first time

Idyllic beach landscape showcasing soft sandy shores lined with lush greenery and dramatic limestone cliffs, with waves gently lapping at the beach

Ao Nang is the most touristy area of Krabi, and it’s where you’ll find top beaches, hotels, tons of bars, and plenty of entertainment options available. Definitely the best choice for first-timers in Krabi!

Ao Nang is around a 45-minute drive from the airport, and you can easily get a taxi since they’re quite affordable.

From the local Buddhist temples (map) to elephant sanctuaries, bustling night markets (map), and beautiful sandy beaches, Ao Nang has something to offer for all types of travelers!

The good part of staying in Ao Nang is that you can find hotels for all budget ranges, from luxury resorts to budget hostels.

What I love most about Krabi is how it caters to different groups of visitors, so you can both relax and go on adventures at any time. Everything in town is catered to tourists, so you’ll have an easy time catching excursions and enjoying your stay to the fullest!

2. Railay Beach – where to stay in Krabi, Thailand, for beaches

Breathtaking view of Railay Beach in Krabi, Thailand, featuring a wide stretch of sandy shore with tourists strolling and swimming

Railay Beach is a stunning beach that I wholeheartedly recommend for active vacation seekers! Overall, this is a hippy, laid-back area, there’s TONS of cafés, bars, and restaurants around, so you’ll always have somewhere to relax and eat.

Railey is located on a peninsula in Krabi, with the beach being separated from the rest of Ao Nang by giant limestone cliffs (awesome sight!), so you need to catch a longtail boat from Ao Nang Beach to get here (15-minute ride).

The good thing is that the boats run multiple times every hour, but the disadvantage is that you can’t fit tons of luggage there – so staying on Railay Beach if you’re traveling with multiple luggage will be a hassle. This being said, there are no vehicles around, so you can just enjoy the beaches and the dramatic views!

The 2 main beaches here are East Railay and West Railay Beach, but there’s a walking street that connects them, and it takes less than 10 minutes by foot to reach the other side. Most of the fun is towards the West End, while the East is a mangrove forest with a few shops and cafés.

You’ll find all the cafés along the Railay Walking Street (map), which is the center of the action in the area! This area is mostly about relaxing, but you can also go rock climbing, quite a popular activity here, and here you can book lessons for all levels!A bit South of Railay Beach, you’ll find the beautiful Princess Cave along the Phra Nang Cave Beach (map), an ideal destination for a one-day trip!

This hotel is only a 4-minute walk from the beach, surrounded by rocks and breathtaking scenery. This Railay Beach resort spa offers beachfront pool villas with a terrace! Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and relax at the spa, or go snorkeling and diving if you’re up to it! End your day with dinner at one of the four restaurants!

3. Phi Phi Islands – the trendiest place to stay in Krabi

Aerial view of a bustling beach resort area with clusters of buildings, vibrant beach activity, and numerous boats in a calm bay surrounded by lush hills

The Phi Phi archipelago consists of six islands, the most popular of which are Koh Phi Phi Don, Koh Phi Phi Leh, and Koh Phai (or Bamboo Island). You can take a ferry from Ao Nang (map) to get to Koh Phi Phi. The journey time is 1 hour 45 minutes, and there are multiple daily departures.

Phi Phi Islands are one of the fastest-developing tourist spots in the area. Following the Covid pandemic, the island is recovering really fast and it actually receives more and more visitors every season.

In just a few years, Phi Phi has transformed from a quiet, secluded resort, to a hotspot with crowded beaches, but it remains one of the most beautiful parts of Southern Thailand. It’s perfect for day trips, but I recommend spending at least 2 nights here to fully enjoy the vibe.

Phi Phi’s popularity increased after Leonardo DiCaprio shot his movie, The Beach, on Phi Phi Leh island’s Maya Bay.

Enjoy white sand beaches, gigantic cliffs that look out of this world, and an atmosphere that will make you forget you’re on Earth! The cliffs’ popularity also brings a lot of tourists here, especially from nearby areas like Phuket. By the way, the ferry from Phuket to Krabi takes around 7 hours!

What’s great about these islands is that they offer a mixture of stunning natural beauty and idyllic landscapes, but also fun nightlife, shops, and some of the best resorts!

I would recommend Phi Phi Island (we’ve got a whole post where exactly to stay here) for younger crowds who want to party, go rock climbing, and try different water sports like scuba diving. Also, for people who don’t mind the crowds and being in such a vibrant place!

For example, Ton Sai (map) is famous for rock climbing, but is also known as a tranquil area where people come to relax and unwind. The beach is within walking distance from the Village and Bay area (which have the same name), which is awesome since you won’t find any cars or roads here, only footpaths!

4. Koh Lanta – where to stay in Krabi with children

View of a wide sandy beach with visitors enjoying the sun, bordered by a calm sea on one side and lush green hills with scattered resorts on the other

Want to enjoy your Thailand vacation, but the big crowds of Ao Nang and Railay Beach just sound like too much? Then Koh Lanta (or Ko Lanta) is the perfect place to stay!

Koh Lanta is an island just off the shores of Krabi, and you can get here with a private minivan, a public minivan (both minivans run from Krabi Airport) or take a ferry by yourself (map).

This nice island has its own Weekend Market (map), more than a dozen beaches, and it offers a vibrant cultural mix with both Buddhist and Muslim populations, much like in the rest of Krabi.

Families traveling with kids LOVE Koh Landa because it offers just the perks they need – quiet days at the beach, stunning nature, and little noise at night. The waters here are mostly shallow, making them perfect for the little ones! Of course, you can try snorkeling and many different water activities here, too!

Honestly, I don’t have kids, but I’d probably choose to stay in Koh Lanta because it just sounds so appealing – get all the natural charm and beauty but without the crowds!

You’ll also find plenty of luxury resorts and rooms at just about any budget range in Koh Lanta!

5. Krabi Town – one of the best areas to stay in Krabi on a budget

Majestic golden Buddha statue sitting atop a mountain, with a temple structure below and panoramic views of lush forests and mountain ranges in the background

Most people pass through the capital of Krabi province on their way to visit the islands, but they don’t know that Krabi Town offers some of the best budget places to stay, and it’s the place to be to explore the authentic, tourist-free Thai culture!

Although it’s the capital of Krabi province, the town is pretty small, but it does a great job at offering the visitors a local vibe, which you’ll probably not encounter in places like Ao Nang and Railay Beach.

Some attractions here include the beautiful temple Wat Kaeo Korawaram (map), Weekend Night Market Krabi Town (map), and the local Krabi Stadium (map) for sports events and entertainment. Just a short ride from Krabi Town, you’ll find the Khao Khanab Nam (map), a wonderful cave with mangroves nearby.

While you’re here, take a 20-minute drive to Wat Tham Suea (map), the city landmark, also known as the Tiger Cave Temple. It rises 280 meters (918 miles) high and offers stunning panoramic views of Krabi.

Oh, and you won’t have enough of exploring the lively markets, shopping for souvenirs in the small stores, and eating at the best places in Krabi Town! The best street food is here!

The only reason I put Krabi Town lower on the list is that it doesn’t have beach access. Since most visitors flock to Krabi for the stunning beaches, I think you wouldn’t be doing your trip justice by staying this far from the beach—unless, of course, you’re not a beach person.

The nearest Ao Nang beach is a 28-minute ride away, and the nearby beaches are accessible by boat.

6. Tubkaek – where to stay in Krabi for couples

Serene Tubkaek Beach in Krabi with expansive sandy shores, lush greenery, and a clear view of distant islands, perfect for couples

Tubkaek is just the place to get spoiled during your stay! It’s got all the luxury resorts (think Ritz Carlton Krabi), spa treatments, beautiful scenery, and dining spots that make it ideal for romantic getaways or a honeymoon.

This resort area is less than 10 km (6.2 miles) Northwest along the coast of Ao Nang, and the ride here takes less than 30 minutes. Take a longtail boat for island hopping, eat at the local markets, and blend in with the locals to make the most of your stay in Tubkaek!

Near Tubkaek, you’ll be able to enjoy plenty of activities in nature, like a trail to the nearby mountain, Dragon’s Crest (map), with stunning nature and unforgettable views. There are also waterfalls and tons of peaks worth exploring if you’re looking for an active vacation!

The most popular place for catching the sunset in the area is also nearby, it’s called Din Daeng Doi (map), and judging by the pictures, it’s absolutely beautiful!

Do note that this area doesn’t have a rich nightlife as it’s mostly resorts and beaches here.
