Thirteen years after James Cameron's Avatar rocked the box office, its long-planned first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, is finally here. Along with it comes a new generation of the Sully family, an all-new clan of Na'vi, new state-of-the-art motion capture technology, and even some old faces with a new look, so figuring out who is behind each character in the new epic tale can be a bit of a challenge. Scroll through our breakdown of all the major new and returning characters (and the actors playing them) to keep track of who is who under all that blue.

Formerly a paraplegic Marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) was sent to Pandora in the first Avatar movie to replace his dead twin brother, who had signed up to meld his mind into the body of a Na'vi, the moon's blue-skinned indigenous species. After joining the Na'vi in a revolt against his fellow "sky people" in the first film, the sequel finds Jake as the chief of the Omaticaya, leading guerrilla attacks against the returned human invaders while also raising a family with his wife Neytiri, which includes his sons Neteyam and Lo'ak, his daughter Tuk, and adoptive daughter Kiri.

Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri

Neytiri te Tskaha Mo'at'ite (Zoe Saldaña) rescues a lost Jake Sully in the first film, and despite not wanting anything to do with humans, she slowly falls in love with the Marine as she teaches him the ways of the Na'vi. After saving his life and expelling the sky people at the end of Avatar, the sequel finds Neytiri settled down and raising her family — while also joining her husband on sneak attacks against the returned humans.

Jamie Flatters as Neteyam

Neteyam (Jamie Flatters) is the eldest child of Jake and Neytiri. He often carries the weight of familial responsibility and blame, especially when his younger brother, Lo'ak, makes brash decisions.

Trinity Bliss as Tuktirey (a.k.a. Tuk)

Tuk (Trinity Bliss) is the youngest of Jake and Neytiri's children, but she doesn't see herself that way. She's "trying to prove that she can do what everyone else does," Bliss previously told EW. "She might be small in size, but she's mighty in courage."

Britain Dalton as Lo'ak

The youngest son of Jake and Neytiri, Lo'ak (Britain Dalton) is the only one of their biological children who has five fingers and faint eyebrows like an Avatar. His appearance has made him a bit of an outcast among the Na'vi, and Lo'ak has grown self-conscious as a result. As headstrong and adventurous as his father, Lo'ak tends to get himself in trouble while vying for Jake's favor over his golden-boy brother, Neteyam.

Sigourney Weaver as Kiri

The 73-year-old actress played Dr. Grace Augustine in the first film, but in Way of the Water, she's primarily playing a completely different role: Kiri, the 14-year-old adopted Na'vi daughter of Jake and Neytiri who was conceived and carried in Grace's now-brain-dead Avatar body.

Weaver plays coy when speaking to EW about the character's origins, noting it's "a bit complicated and mysterious." Kiri has a strong connection to nature and the animals that inhabit Pandora. She's closest to the spirit of Eywa, the Na'vi God. Given her seemingly immaculate conception, "Na'vi Jesus" isn't a far-out descriptor for Kiri.

Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch

Avatar The Way of Water Stephen Lang and Avatar Quaritch
; 20th Century Studios

The villainous head of security for the RDA, the Earth-based corporation colonizing Pandora, Col. Quaritch (Stephen Lang) is killed by Neytiri at the end of the first film. But he's back in Way of the Water, having been resurrected by the RDA as a Recombinant, an Avatar embedded with his human memories. And he couldn't be happier with his new mission: tracking down and killing the Na'vi rebel leader, Jake Sully, who, along with Neytiri, also happens to be the target of his personal revenge fantasies.

Murder isn't the only thing on Quaritch's mind in Way of the Water, as he's reconnected with an unexpected figure from his past who will play a big role in his future. So don't expect the colonel's storyline to be wrapped up with a bow at the end of the first sequel. Cameron told EW there are "a couple questions" purposefully left unanswered about him by the end of The Way of Water. "I wouldn't say he's even in the middle of his journey," Lang also told EW of his character, "There's a long, long way to go."

Edie Falco as General Ardmore

Avatar The Way of Water

The leader of RDA's military efforts, General Ardmore (Edie Falco), is on a mission to make Pandora a new home for humanity as Earth decays. And for now, that means destroying the native population. After bringing Col. Quaritch back from the dead, Ardmore tasks him with bringing down Jake Sully, the leader of the Na'vi rebel resistance.

Cliff Curtis as Tonowari

Avatar The Way of Water Cliff Curtis and Tonowari
; 20th Century Studios

Way of the Water introduces us to an all-new clan of Na'vi, the ocean-dwelling Metkayina, who live on Pandora's reefs. Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) is the leader of these Na'vi, who looks a little different than the ones we've seen thus far, with thicker tales and forearms to help them swim faster. A well-respected and strong leader, Tonowari also values the input of his mate, Ronal.

Kate Winslet as Ronal

As strong and wise as her mate, Ronal (Kate Winslet) is the spiritual leader of her clan. Cameron previously told EW that while Tonowari is the "Olo'eyktan," meaning the male leader who handles "hunting, weaving," and "any kind of fabrication work," Ronal is the "Tsahìk," meaning "the shaman, the keeper of wisdom." Already mother to Tsireya and Aonung, Ronal is pregnant with another child during the events of Way of the Water, but she doesn't let that stop her from engaging in battle.

"I just thought, 'My god, that is just so cool,'" Winslet told EW of her fight scenes. "Jim has so much admiration for women and pregnant women and what pregnant women are capable of, and how pregnant women are actually much more resilient and physically capable than I think often people give us credit for or would expect."

Bailey Bass as Tsireya (a.k.a Reya)

Tsireya (Bailey Bass), nicknamed Reya, is the daughter of Ronal and Tonowari, and the sister of Aonung. She's a welcoming presence for the Sully family upon their arrival, and blossoms into a love interest for Lo'ak.

Jack Champion as Miles 'Spider' Socorro

Born in Hell's Gate, the former human base on Pandora from the first film, Spider (Jack Champion) was left behind by the RDA when the militarized organization fled Pandora after the first movie. As the film explains, infants weren't able to survive the cryogenic stasis required for the space journey back to Earth. Jake took Spider in and raised him as one of his family, though Neytiri sees him as other. "Then Quaritch comes and all the stuff happens that just complicates his emotional feelings even more," Champion told EW.
