Fibre – Rayon

Origin and preparation

Rayon is a regenerated fiber which uses mostly bamboo grass as the cellulose donor. It was first produced in the UK by a company called ‘Courtaulds fibers’ in 1905. The Image result for rayon fibrecompany then later opened up in America, where they created their own version of the fiber. Rayon was the first manufactured fiber. The term rayon was officially adopted by the textile industry. Unlike most man-made fibers, rayon is not synthetic. It is made from wood pulp, a naturally-occurring, cellulose-based raw material.Image result for rayon fibre

Physical and aesthetic properties

Rayon Fiber’s cellulose base contributes many properties similar to those of cotton or other natural cellulose fibers. Rayon Fiber is comfortable, soft to the skin, and has the moderate dry strength and abrasion resistance. Rayon has many different properties which make it a great fiber, some of these being:

  • It is highly absorbent
  • It is soft and comfortable against the skin
  • Due to its great absorbency, it is very easy to dye. It can be dyed many different colors which are all left very bold
  • Rayon also has a great drape
  • Rayon has great tensile strength, although when it is wet it becomes weaker
