Brian Michael Bendis’ Shelf

Like I’ve said before, when collecting comics it’s always best to choose a handful of writers you like and just follow their work, rather than any specific character or publisher. The writer that I started following first, and the writer that got me into comics with Ultimate Spider-Man 15 years ago is Brian Michael Bendis.

We’ve already seen a lot of his work on my other shelves; a couple of days ago on the USM shelf, the Avengers shelf before that, and the Street Level Heroes shelf that opened this blog. This one focuses on his non-big-two publications, and on the face of it you could call this…

The Powers Shelf

Powers is a series that lets Bendis be Bendis unlike any other book. It’s a mixture of his two specialities; superheroes and crime, and it’s full of his trademark banter and curse words. It’s hopefully found a new popularity since the launch of the TV series, but (like many snobs have said before me) I really think the book is the superior product.

These six hardcovers collect everything until Powers: Bureau, which will hopefully get a similar release at some point. There’s an Omnibus on the horizon that collects the first three OHC’s though, so I’m not I can count on it anymore.

The release schedule for Powers has been sporadic for the last few years, no doubt because Mike Oeming has been juggling a lot of projects like Mice Templar and his other Bendis’ collaboration ‘United States of Murder Inc’. An artist can only produce so many pages a week unfortunately, and Oeming is one of the faster ones out there.

They’ve just started on a new volume, which will be the fourth time we’ve been back to issue 1 with this book, but it’s a welcome return and it feels like the same old Powers we’re used to. If you’ve never read the series I’d recommend pre-ordering the new Omnibus and starting from the beginning with it.

The Secret Stash

That was only the stuff you could see on the surface. The matching covers make for a nice looking shelf so Powers gets to take centre-stage. But behind those is plenty more good stuff, starting with Bendis’ early crime work.

Fire, Goldfish, Jinx and Torso are some of the first stories Bendis published, and Icon have reprinted them in this series of miniature hardcovers. Most of the art is by Bendis himself and it’s surprisingly serviceable and suits the black and white format really well.

After that he got some work for Image comics, writing a crime series similar to Powers but set in the Spawn universe. Sam & Twitch is a great book that latger inspire Gotham Central by Brubaker and Rucka (found in the DC Origins shelf). He also did a short run on Todd McFarlane’s Hellspawn.

Bendis tends to work with the same collaborators over and over again; one of those pairings is with Alex Maleev from Daredevil, Spider-Woman and Moon Knight. Scarlet is a fourth-wall breaking rebel who ends up starting a new American Revolution after she witnesses the corruption of society first-hand. The book has lost its stride somewhat as Maleev has been doing other projects, but hopefully volume two will be finished before the end of the decade.

The Crown Jewels

When you list the Authors that appear on my shelf by the amount of work of their I own, Bendis comes out on top with over 100 volumes worth. This isn’t just because he’s so prolific, I genuinely love his style of writing and books like USM, Daredevil and New Avengers made me the comic reader I am today.

I’ve shown that I’ve been able to meet quite a few of my heroes in comics already, but Bendis is someone I never thought I’d meet because he doesn’t really do convention appearances anymore and I live an ocean away from him. Fortunately I was wrong, and when I went to NYCC last year he was there to promote the Powers TV show. I was able to get a few books signed by the guy who started my obsession.

This is the first Powers OHC that was signed by Bendis, Oeming (with a Walker head sketch), and the cast of the Powers TV show. This was the first one they’d had on the line so Sony filmed it for their Powers video diary stuff, but I don’t know if it ever went on the internet…

Anyway, that’s been the Bendis shelf. Please remember to LIKE and FOLLOW in order to subscribe to my future content. Send me questions or comments in the usual way and check out my previous reading lists and stuff on the links at the top of the main page.

Thanks for reading.
