Henderson Waves

Singapore

A ribbon in the sky: The Henderson Waves brings a touch of architectural sophistication to Singapore’s Southern Ridges.

Discover the Henderson Waves

The Henderson Waves, gracefully emerging from the verdant canopy of Singapore’s Southern Ridges, was unveiled to the public on 10th May 2008. Its fantastical shape mirrors the undulating form of a wave as it soars 36 metres above the futuristic city-state.

As night falls the curved wooden design, which offers sun-shading by day, is illuminated transcendently. But beyond its aesthetic allure, the Henderson Waves is the highest pedestrian bridge in the country, connecting various green spots across Southern Singapore. These spots include Kent Ridge Park, HortPark, Labrador Nature Reserve, Telok Blangah Hill Park, and Mount Faber Park.

A Ribbon in the Sky

Running 274 metres through the Singaporean sky, the Henderson Waves, is not merely a bridge but a poetic expression of architectural ingenuity. Its fluid design is anchored by seven curved steel ‘ribs’, both above and below the walkway. These ‘ribs’, constructed from Balau wood, a dense hardwood indigenous to Southeast Asia, create not only a visual masterpiece but also hidden niches and shaded alcoves, providing privacy and resting areas for visitors.

As the sun dips below the horizon, Henderson Waves undergoes a magical transformation. The integrated LED lighting system illuminates the bridge, casting a gentle glow that transforms the structure into a luminous ribbon suspended in the night sky. This spectacle can be viewed from 7pm until 7am, daily.

As light shows go in Singapore, its perhaps not as impressive as other spectacles such as The Fountain of Wealth or the Marina Bay Sands Light Show. But it is still quite breathtaking and ethereal.

The Southern Ridges

As Henderson Waves extends its sinuous embrace over the tree-lined hills, it offers more than just a scenic passage; it provides a panoramic view of the harbour, the Southern Islands, and the Southern Ridges. This elevated vantage point transforms the mundane act of crossing a bridge into an immersive experience, allowing visitors to be enveloped by nature — the rustling leaves, the vibrant flora, and the gentle warm breeze.

The idea for Henderson Waves was conceptualised in 2002. The aim was to create a bridge that could connect, among others, the iconic Mount Faber Park with the Telok Blangah Hill Park, along the Southern Ridges. The Southern Ridges are themselves part of a commitment to maintaining Singapore’s status as the greenest city in Asia. After its creation the Southern Ridges, including Henderson Waves, was awarded the Urban Land Institute Global Awards for Excellence in 2010; in recognition of its seamless blending of the urban and natural world.
