The 2013 Ferrari LaFerrari (LaFerrari) is a limited-production hybrid hypercar by Ferrari that has been featured in every Xbox One and Windows 10 Forza title since its debut in the eponymous LaFerrari Car Pack for Forza Motorsport 5.

The LaFerrari, whose name means "The Ferrari" in most Romance languages in the sense that it is the most definitive Ferrari, was created to succeed the Enzo. Also codenamed the F70, it currently stands as Ferrari's fastest and second most powerful road car ever made, with a hybrid powertrain producing a total of 963 PS (949 hp; 708 kW), behind the Ferrari SF90 Stradale's 1,000 PS (986 hp; 735 kW).

Overview[edit | edit source]

The LaFerrari is the first hybrid road car by the Italian luxury car marque from Maranello, providing the highest power output of any Ferrari road car whilst also decreasing fuel consumption by 40%.[1]

As Ferrari's flagship hypercar of the 2010s, it was limited to only 499 units, each costing more than US$1.5 million, although a 500th unit was built following the August 2016 Central Italy earthquake.[2]

Design[edit | edit source]

The LaFerrari's design did not involve Pininfarina, making it the first Ferrari since the Bertone-styled Dino 308 GT4 of 1973 to not feature any Pininfarina bodywork or other styling.[3]

The LaFerrari's cockpit stands out for its essentiality and sportiness of the shapes, intended to convey the car's performance level as a hypercar. A Formula 1-style steering wheel is present with integrated controls and gear levers directly fixed to the steering column, a solution allowing for better use in all conditions. The "bridge" which exists between the two seats, designed like a suspended wing, is home to other instruments linked to the dual-clutch gearbox. The instrumentation consists of a 310 mm (12.2 in) TFT display with the option to choose between two layouts and can host data from the telemetry system.

The LaFerrari uses carbon ceramic Brembo brake discs on both the front (398 mm (15.7 in)) and rear (380 mm (15 in)),[4] as well as Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires measuring 265/30R19 on the front and 345/30R20 at the rear.[5] Its brakes were later reused for the Ferrari 812 Superfast.

The car uses a carbon fibre monocoque structure designed by Ferrari's F1 technical director Rory Byrne, with a claimed 27% more torsional rigidity and 22% more beam stiffness than the Enzo.[6] It has a double wishbone suspension in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear.[7] It has a claimed dry weight of 2,767 lb (1,255 kg) and an actual curb weight of 3,495 lb (1,585 kg), making it Ferrari's heaviest mid-engined road car to date.[5] The LaFerrari has a 39%/61% weight balance.[5]

Technical specifications[edit | edit source]

The LaFerrari's engine is a 6,262 cc (6.3 L; 382.2 in3) naturally aspirated F140 FE V12 that makes 800 PS (789 hp; 588 kW) and 700 N·m (516 ft·lb) of torque.[7] Aiding the V12 are a single electric motor and HY-KERS unit producing an additional 163 PS (160 hp; 120 kW) and 200 N·m (148 ft·lb) of torque for a total output of 963 PS (949 hp; 708 kW) and 900 N·m (663 ft·lb).[7]

Driving the rear wheels is a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

Performance[edit | edit source]

The LaFerrari is stated by the company to exceed a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).[7] It also accelerates from 0 - 60 mph (0 - 97 km/h) in 2.9 seconds, 0 - 100 mph (0 - 161 km/h) in 5.2 seconds, and is claimed to reach 124 mph (200 km/h) in under 7 seconds and 300 km/h (186 mph) in 15 seconds.[7] The LaFerrari is also the fastest road car around Ferrari's private Fiorano Test Circuit, with a lap time of 1 minute 19.7 seconds, beating the Ferrari F12tdf and 488 Pista.[5]

It has different top speeds in each Forza title:

  • Forza Motorsport 6/Forza Motorsport 6: Apex: 351 km/h (218 mph)
  • Forza Motorsport 7: 346 km/h (215 mph)

The LaFerrari has a power-to-weight ratio of 599 hp (607 PS; 447 kW) per tonne or 3.68 lb (1.67 kg) per horsepower.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

In many cases, the player should try not to prioritize this car over others as there are many that can outperform it in its class or higher and, in most cases, for lower prices.

Advantages[edit | edit source]

The LaFerrari's strongest performance traits are its acceleration, handling, and braking, capable of steering through corners better than most of its competitors. It is always the fastest road-legal Ferrari in each Forza title, surpassing the Ferrari F12berlinetta, reaching speeds that exceed 216 mph (348 km/h), which is exaggerated to an extremely unrealistic 413 km/h (257 mph) in Forza Horizon 3 and 415 km/h (258 mph) in Forza Horizon 4. It also launches out of standing starts with minimal wheelspin.

In Forza Motorsport 5 and Forza Motorsport 6, it is a moderately strong contender for R Class races involving only cars from the Modern Hypercars and Modern Hypercar divisions, respectively.

In Forza Horizon 2, it is one of the fastest S2 Class cars, capable of dominating short tracks with a stock tune. It is challenged by the Ferrari 458 Speciale and Lamborghini Veneno. In Forza Horizon 4, it is the second fastest naturally aspirated car by top speed, with a maximum top speed of 432 km/h (268 mph).

Disadvantages[edit | edit source]

The LaFerrari's acceleration weakens as it reaches 149 mph (240 km/h) and beyond. In addition, it loses to the Porsche 918 Spyder's faster acceleration and better overall stability around corners and McLaren P1's higher top speed and faster acceleration to the aforementioned speed and beyond. Also, its top speed decreases with each successive Forza Motorsport title, where it has a lower top speed than the Ferrari 812 Superfast, 488 GTB, and even the Enzo Ferrari, although this is inverted with the Forza Horizon series. Despite having a higher top speed than the P1's 410 km/h (255 mph) in Forza Horizon 3 and 408 km/h (254 mph) in Forza Horizon 4, these differences in top speed are not enough to even make the LaFerrari superior over the P1 on long distance routes.

The biggest disadvantage that the LaFerrari has against its competitors is the lack of conversions aside from AWD drivetrain swaps. As it cannot be changed into a twin-turbocharged powerhouse, nor can it receive engine swaps from other cars, its competitiveness is tremendously reduced, especially due to the greater affluence of superior cars like the Nissan NISMO GT-R LM Forza Edition, Lamborghini Centenario LP 770-4, Apollo Intensa Emozione, Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione, and Mosler MT900S, the latter three of which dominate Class X in Forza Horizon 4. Also, in Forza Horizon 4, the LaFerrari cannot reach Class X without the generic Race Rear Wing or Race Front Bumper upgrades, especially if converted to AWD.

In the Forza Motorsport series, the LaFerrari is also disadvantaged by its inferior handling compared to various GT race cars in R Class or even S Class, thus making this car unsuitable for R Class races, even those that are restricted to the Hypercar division, where it is considered the worst car in its class due to its lackluster overall performance in comparison to other cars in its class, especially the Lamborghini Veneno and Aston Martin Vulcan. In addition, in all games except Forza Horizon 3 and Forza Horizon 4, its engine cannot be upgraded, further diminishing any potential for a higher top speed, which is important for higher-speed routes like Le Mans Circuit de la Sarthe.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Forza Motorsport 5 marked the LaFerrari's video game debut.
  • The LaFerrari in each Forza title is depicted with a front weight distribution rating of 41%, likely because its 39% front weight distribution rating that it has in real life would have made the car too difficult to even comfortably drive.

  • In Forza Horizon 3, the LaFerrari is always the first car the player races against in a Head-to-Head race, done during the introductory sequences of the game.
  • In the Series 2 update for Forza Horizon 4, the LaFerrari's engine note was changed to be the same as that of the Ferrari F12tdf.

Mistakes[edit | edit source]

  • In every game except Forza Motorsport 7, the LaFerrari is featured with an abnormally higher power output of 963 hp (718 kW), despite that 963 is actually its power output in metric horsepower (PS), which logically makes the car have 949 hp (708 kW) like in real life.
    • This error does not carry over to the FXX K, however.
  • The LaFerrari is wrongly much lighter in each Forza game than it is in real life, with a weight rating of 3,031 lb (1,375 kg). This is only closer to the car's dry weight rating of 2,767 lb (1,255 kg), meaning it should be 3,495 lb (1,585 kg).
    • This also results in the FXX K having a weight rating of 2,831 lb (1,284 kg) when it logically should be 3,296 lb (1,495 kg).
  • None of the LaFerrari's parts are openable in Forzavista in Forza Motorsport 5 except for the doors, headlights, and rear wing.
    • In Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 4, the LaFerrari's rear wing and rear diffuser remain retracted, even during full-force braking.
      • In addition, the lid inside the front trunk and the rear engine glass cover cannot be flung open in Forza Motorsport 7. Forza Horizon 4 allows the lid in the front trunk to be opened again, though.
  • The LaFerrari's KERS display on its dashboard is static. The FXX K's is dynamic, however.
